Derby Porcelain Manufactory (operated about 1751-1848), circa 1770-1785. A set of four Derby figures emblematic of the four quarters or continents of the globe. Each modeled as a draped figure standing on a gilt heightened rocaille molded base the cartouche scrolls on the front enclosing the name of the continent represented inscribed in gilt; 'Europe' wearing a headband, an orb in her right hand (broken), her left holding a fruit filled cornucopia with helmet, tools and other attributes at the base of the plinth ; 'Asia' with a scarf in her hair, holding a bottle of exotic spices in her right hand, a camel recumbent at her feet; 'America' as an Indian modeled wearing a feathered headdress a quiver over his shoulder, his right foot resting on the back of an alligator; 'Africa' as a Nubian wearing an elephant headdress, a sceptre in right hand and left knee on a lion recumbent at his feet. The underside of each with incised "N 200" and incised in script 'Large" with hallmarks in underglaze blue. Approximate height 9", base with 4.25", base depth 4".
All figures with significant repairs and over-painting. Specifically noted missing; 'Europe' missing top half of orb; 'America' missing thumb; Asia with loss of leaves in the back; Africa with loss of leaves in back. Cornucopias to the Africa and Europe figures has small chips with losses. All pieces would benefit from professional restoration.
