Attributed to Dean Wolstenholme, Sr. (British, 1757-1837), "After The Hunt", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Genre scene depicting a huntsman standing behind his horse at left with right arm extended to side holding top hat, left arm extending over horse's back clutching dead rabbit by the feet, the man's two hunting greyhound dogs resting in foreground, the figures set within an Autumnal landscape amid tall brush and trees. Period paper label to verso of frame for Muller & Co. of London, England (1878-1915). Framed approximately 16.5" x 19.75". Unframed approximately 13.25" x 16.5". Provenance: From the Estate of Henry G. Muecke Jr., Atlanta, Georgia.
Examined under black light. Oxidation to verso of stretcher and canvas commensurate with age. Craquelure to paint surface commensurate with age. Evidence of older varnish layer. Areas of minor inpainting to figure's face, horse, both dogs and background, including to tree, sky, and ground. Three small abraded dents to upper right quadrant in sky with minor uneven paint loss. Paint layer stable.
