Cornelis Wouter Bouter (Dutch, 1888-1966), “A Mother’s Joy”, oil on canvas, signed lower right, verso of frame with remnants of Christie’s labels. Figural genre painting depicting a mother wearing white bonnet seated in ladderback chair, next to table with copper teapot and cup, holding a steaming tapered pot in hand with spoon next to young child in woven wicker rocking bassinet eating out of smaller cup or mug. Two girls flank central figures—one seated reading, the other standing and watching over her little sibling holding rag doll. Interior with small fire under hanging cast iron lidded pot, stored pot on wall, clock with brass weights and view out of paned window at left to spring day. Framed approximately 39.25” x 47.5”. Unframed approximately 31.5” x 39.5”.
