- Lot Description
Continental School, 19th century. "Angel with Lute", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Depicting winged angel in belted tunic with tassel adornments, seated with lute in hand. Unframed approximately 29.25" x 24.43". Framed approximately 38" x 33.25".
Condition
Painting relined. Under black light examination scattered in-painting present throughout, with significant in-painting apparent in the following areas: (1) upper left corner (2) upper right corner (3) surrounding front of figure’s face and head (4) all edges (consistent with frame rubbing) (5) large band along bottom (including significant portion of foot) (6) lower right quadrant just to the right of drapery. Surface with even craquelure throughout. Paint layer stable without apparent signs of lifting.
