Continental School, 19th century. "The Bosphorus", oil on canvas, indistinguishably signed lower right (L. Lobusof?). Large horizontally aligned marine painting depicting a group of sailboats on calm water in the Bosphorus strait in Northwest Turkey dividing Europe from Asia under a cloudy sky. Framed approximately 33" x 50". Unframed approximately 22" x 39.25". Note: Proceeds of this sale benefit the non-profit Cathedral Thrift House in Atlanta, Georgia.
Painting would likely brighten with light professional cleaning. Scattered craquelure throughout commensurate with age. Under black light examination, greenish hue from older varnish coat. Light in-painting or retouches in water between boats and smaller rowboats lower right. Small pinhole upper right with retouches. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
