Continental School (likely German or Austrian), 19th century. "Portrait of a Boy in Uniform", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Portrait painting depicting a boy at bust length with brown curly hair, pale complexion with pink cheeks wearing a white collared shirt under an ornate black jacket with gold and silver buttons and embroidery with drop front chest strap, tasseled neck tie, seated in armchair and hands resting on pommel of sword, beside table with feathered hat. Framed 27.25" x 23". Unframed approximately 24.25" x 20".
Painting has been relined. Oxidation to verso of stretcher commensurate with age. Under blacklight examination, hazy green varnish to paint layer over background and figure's body. Scattered in painting to background with one repaired linear tear at lower left, approximately 2", and foreground at right with repaired puncture and c-shaped tear, approximately 3". Minor in painting to figure on nose, right cheek, forehead, beside right eye, under chin, and hands. In painting to cord on hat and to feathers. In painted frame rubbing to each side. None of the repairs or inpainting readily apparent to naked eye or distracting to composition.
