Harry Burton (English, 1879-1949). A collection of over 100 photographs documenting the excavation of King Tutankhamun's tomb by the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art photographer known mainly for accompanying Howard Carter for eight years during his excavation of the young pharaoh's final resting place in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt. Collection comprising 33 original press photos, 35 full size period scans of original press photos, 12 period photos and/or scans of newspaper clippings, and period scans of 74 quarter size press photographs combined onto 19 sheets, the original press photos bearing stamps and labels from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Photograph Services department. Each photo on sheet measuring approximately 10" x 8". Provenance: acquired by present owner from The Estate of Mr. James R. Messenger, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Mr. Messenger is the writer and director of the 1978 film documentary "Of Time, Tombs and Treasure" based on the Met's exhibition "Treasures of Tutankhamen, the film winning an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Short in 1979 - these photos acquired by Messenger from the Met during his research for the film.
