• Lot Description
  Harry Burton (English, 1879-1949). A collection of over 100 photographs documenting the excavation of King Tutankhamun's tomb by the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art photographer known mainly for accompanying Howard Carter for eight years during his excavation of the young pharaoh's final resting place in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt. Collection comprising 33 original press photos, 35 full size period scans of original press photos, 12 period photos and/or scans of newspaper clippings, and period scans of 74 quarter size press photographs combined onto 19 sheets, the original press photos bearing stamps and labels from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Photograph Services department. Original press photos comprising "Upper portion of innermost gold coffin showing floral wreath around king's neck (TAA 1350)", "Howard Carter opening the door of the second shrine (TAA 678)", (MM59535), (MM59534), (MM57794), "Examination of the Mummy (TAA 391)", (TAA 1346), "Third innermost gold coffin (TAA 1351)", "Within the sarcophagus after the covering linen shrouds had been removed (TAA 360)", (TAA 616), (TAA 967), (TAA 511), (TAA 368), (TAA 557), "Mummy - exterior wrappings (TAA 513)", (TAA 1153), "Head of Mummy - side view (TAA 535), (TAA 54A), "First (outermost) shrine within the sepulchre (TAA 674), "Interior of Antechamber: The Hathor Couch (TAA 9)", "Second Shrine (TAA 677)", (MM 57793), (TAA 682), (TAA 1345), "Antechamber with sealed door (TAA 4)", "Lid of innermost shrine (TAA 684)", (TAA 603), "Alabaster vases in Antechamber Carter XXII (TAA 21)", (MM 59316), (TAA 358), (TAA 191), (TAA 15), and (TAA 40). Each photo on sheet measuring approximately 10" x 8". Provenance: acquired by present owner from The Estate of Mr. James R. Messenger, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Mr. Messenger is the writer and director of the 1978 film documentary "Of Time, Tombs and Treasure" based on the Met's exhibition "Treasures of Tutankhamen, the film winning an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Short in 1979 - these photos acquired by Messenger from the Met during his research for the film.
