CIrcle of William Aikman (Scottish, 1682-1731). "Portrait of Stately Man with Black Hair", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Early to mid 18th century formal portrait painting depicting a distinguished older gentleman at bust length with thick and curly black hair worn long and parted at center with the length gathered behind his head and cascading over his shoulder, the man wearing a plum colored velvet jacket with buttons down the front with a white lace cravat at his neck, his long face with pale skin and rosy cheeks accentuating a large nose and wide, slightly smiling pink lips, the figure set within an ovular painted cartouche. 19th century paper label to verso of stretcher for Hay & Lyall, carvers and gilders to the Queen, founded in 1811 in Aberdeen, Scotland. Framed approximately 36.125" x 31.125", unframed approximately 30.125" x 25". Provenance: From the Estate of Henry G. Muecke Jr., Atlanta, Georgia.
