Christian Schussele (American (born France), 1824-1879), "Children with Dog and Pigeons on Stoop"-1865, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "C. Schussele." Painting depicts three children posed in a triangular formation on the front steps of a building, at lower right the youngest female child is perched on the lowest step and wears a loose fitting dress with lace neckline and embraces a small brown dog, possibly daschound, the child on the left is male and wears a button down shirt tucked into pleated pants and black shoes, his left hand is extended and releasing bird seed just in front of the small girl on the step below, the third child is female and stands above the other two dressed in a white gown with blue bows at either shoulder and black boots, she holds a green book in her left hand, in the foreground three pigeons peck at seeds dropped by the male child, vines and blooming red flowers frame the left hand side of the canvas while a red textile and a hoop and stick for hoop rolling frame the right hand side. Framed approximately 46" x 39". Unframed approximately 40" x 33".
Painting has been relined. Work with scattered cracquelure commensurate with age, paint layer appears to be stable without signs of lifting. Two untreated vertical abrasions in upper left (within leaves)--the largest running approximately 4.125", the other running approximately 1". Under black light examination, largest in-painting in upper left within leaves. Boy's neck with light retouches, girls with flake retouching on faces and necks, and light retouches on feathers of pigeons, predominately far left bird. Light wear and paint loss to edges of frame from rubbing. Lower corners with some scattered scrapes to paint layer. Frame with light gilt loss, upper left corner missing leaf ornament. No other apparent signs of damage, loss or repair.
