Chinese, likely 20th century. Dark zitan hardwood box of rectangular form with rounded corners, fitted lid decorated with serpentine five clawed golden dragon amid cloud scrolls and bats rendered out of carved stones and mother of pearl. Unmarked. Approximate height 3.4", width 10.5", depth 6".
Under black light examination, no apparent repairs. One line of wood splitting along grain to lid to left of dragon's body with corresponding split to interior of lid but not exhibiting to side wall of lid. Small chip to mother of pearl ornamentation on dragon's neck, approximately 2mm. Overall with minor and scattered surface scratches commensurate with general handling, also with residue and grime especially to corners and crevices.
