Chinese, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century. A miniature or child's size hardwood step-back scholar's cabinet, etagere or shrine cabinet having a pierced carved frieze over staggered shelves with scroll spandrels and three small drawers with turned wood pulls, the base with architectural style three quarter gallery over a pair of paneled cupboard doors enclosing an open interior above a scroll carved apron. The underside with red export wax seal. Approximate height 34.25", width 24.75, depth 13.6".
Structurally sound. Overall good condition. There are two small repairs to the pierced frieze detected with ultraviolet light. There is also a chip with loss on the pierced frieze. There is an obvious glue repair to one of the scroll spandrels at the top shelf. There is an old horizontal crack on the side raised paneled with traces of old glue. The decorative latch is missing from the cupboard doors although they still shut evenly and stay closed. Wear to the finish with some chipping particularly at the top commensurate with age and usage.
