Chinese, likely early 20th century. Blue and white decorated porcelain ginger jar of traditional form with short neck and rounded sloped body ornamented with hand painted enamels depicting eight horses in varied gestural positions in and outdoor setting with grasses, stylized pine trees and rocky expanses. Marked with three character mark in blue under glaze on shoulder under double blue bordered ring for Lang Shining (born Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688-1766), bottom with two blue rings. Approximate height 7.25", diameter of foot 5.75". Note: Castiglione was born in Italy and studied painting under the noted Jesuit artist, Andrea Pozzo. At the age of 19, Castiglione joined the Society of Jesus and travled to other parts of Italy to paint works in Catholic churches. About eight years later, he moved to China where he continued to paint in churches. In China, he adopted the Chinese name Lang Sining and later became a court artist for the Qianlong Emperor. He is noted for is use of color, perspective and light and notably his depiction of horses. He predominately painted on silk in a blended style of Eastern and Western aesthetics. It is debated whether or not Lang Shining painted on porcelain or if his motifs and style were adopted and rendered on porcelain works.

Please note, Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery sells items at a rate of approximately 80 to 100 lots per hour in a live auction setting. Since the auction moves quickly, online bidding platforms are,at times, unable to keep up with the pace. To avoid potential disappointment when bidding on an online platform, consider placing a realistic absentee bid in advance of the sale. Priority, in regards to bidding, goes to in-house floor bidders. Occasionally, the auctioneer may reject a live online bid and/or reopen a lot after the close of online bidding (typically due to a missed in-house floor bid). Due to this possibility, at times the online bidding platform will show an online bidder as the winning bid when they are not. All final winning bidders will be notified via invoicing from Ahlers & Ogletree typically by the Monday immediately following the sale. To bid with Ahlers & Ogletree as a phone or absentee bidder, please feel free to email us at bid@AandOAuctions.com.
