Chinese, 19th century. Chinese Export black lacquered and polychrome decorated wedding, dowry or marriage chest on cabinet, probably Yuncheng, Shanxi province, the chest decorated with genre scene with royal figures and attendants in garden pavilions and terraced houses, within a floral border, the cabinet similarly decorated having 3 open fretwork carved with meander scroll and scrolling foliage over a pair of cupboard doors raised on stiles united by a pierced carved apron. Both pieces with Jian Ding (Certified) Export Approval Seals. Chest height 13.35", width 33.5", depth 19.5". Cabinet height 45", width 33.5", depth 19.9".
Provenance: The consignor's mother began collecting Chinese antiquities back in the 1960's. The majority of her collection was acquired from her great paternal grandparents who were from the China city of Guangzhou, in the province of Guangdong. This Chinese Wedding cabinet was a wedding gift from consignor's parents who received permission and exportation rights to ship these two pieces to the United States.
Horizontal crack to top of trunk (see image 9). Scattered chips & abrasions to finish as well as interior, commensurate with age & usage. Repair to front right door. Scattered repairs to fret work on front. Hardware appears to be original.
