Attributed to Nichols Chinese Rug Company (Chinese, 1924-1959), circa 1920s. A Chinese Art Deco room size rug, wool woven of rectangular form with dark indigo border sparsely decorated with scrolling foliage and butterflies in shades of blue, ivory, tan, cream and teal, the open field decorated with a pictorial to the lower right with a standing crane and deer holding the lingzhi in its mouth amidst rockwork and foliage. Apparently not signed. Approximate width 8', length 10.41'. Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia.
Overall pile is fairly worn, commensurate with age & usage. Some evidence of fading. Some moth damage. Fringe has been cut down.
