Chinese, 18th century. A fine black lacquered six panel lacquered and stone floor screen, marked with Ch'ien Lung Dynasty (1736-1795) seal at bottom left corner below calligraphy noting the period as well. Front of screen portraying an ornate and detailed scene of figures celebrating a marriage or betrothal in a variety of activities including holding kites, conversing, looking on from windows, and playing music. Figures and mythical beasts at bottom with carved hardstone faces, architectural elements and clothing. Gilt accented borders, diaper patterning, flowers throughout. Verso with hand painted and gilt accented decoration of cranes and other birds surrounding water with pink lotus flowers. Work accompanied with copy of invoice from Asprey & Company Limited with description of screen and a copy of print advertisement where Asprey & Company Limited featured the screen. Overall measures approximately 68" x 93". Provenance: Acquired from Asprey & Company Limited, Bond Street, London in 1970.
