Cecil Calvert Beall (American (New York/ Wyoming), 1892-1967). "The Saloon Stairs", watercolor and gouache on artists board, inscribed lower right "C. C. Beale 157". Likely 1950s illustration depicting a call girl ascending a staircase with a young man in close pursuit behind her as she raises her skirt to him revealing a stockinged leg and crinoline underskirt and turns her face toward him to engage in conversation, the young man with open mouth in a sexually charged expression and wearing a stiff brimmed cap, plaid jacket, and gray pants, the scene backed by a wood paneled wall. Framed approximately 26.125" x 19.25", unframed approximately 22" x 15.125".
Note: Beall was the art director for the National Democratic Party during President Roosevelt's administration as well as a noted illustrator and portrait artist during the 1930s and 40s with his works being regularly featured in the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. His memberships include the American Watercolor Society, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Salmagundi Club, and the Society of Illustrators, which gave Beall an Award of Excellence in 1961.
