English or Flemish, Late 15th/Early 16th century, circa 1500. Ecclesiastic devotional oak wood sculpture carved in deep relief depicting the Dormition of the Virgin (Mother of God) with deceased Virgin Mary in robes at center being carried by St. Peter and St. Paul the procession to her tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane, floating disembodied hands touch the draped cloth on Mary's robes depicting the story of the high priest, Athonios, who out of spite and anger wanted to disrupt the procession topple the funeral bier on which the Virgin's body laid, as the high priest approached an angel of God invisibly cut off his hands. Unmarked. Death of the Virgin sculpture supported on a later plinth base. Overall approximate height 15.4", width 12.5", depth 3.6". Provenance: Joanna Booth, 247 Kings Road, London, England whereby acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia in June of 1990.
