English, early 20th century. A Carlton House rosewood and satinwood marquetry and bone inlay desk, having a U-shaped design, the top inset with a gilt tooled leather writing surface, with three conforming cabinets, the tallest in the center, with a curved door, marquetry inlaid and depicting the Greek goddess Athena, underneath a classical awning with fluted columns and a black and white tiled floor, flanked by two lower, shaped side cabinets, each line and marquetry inlaid with putti engaged in scenes of industry and education, the sides marquetry inlaid with owls, and the tops with a pierced brass gallery, the curved portions of the desk inlaid with scrolled acanthus foliates, fitted with three drawers, one long central and two short and curved, each line and marquetry inlaid with putti and foliage, on six squared and tapered legs, the tops of each line and marquetry inlaid with foliated drops, with castor feet. Stamped "Davis & Co.", "255 Tottenham Ct. St.", with "T. Winson / House Furniture & Commission Agent / St. George St. Liverpool" to drawer interior. Approximate height 38.625", width 41.625", depth 21.5".
