- Lot Description
Carl Kauba (Austrian, 1865-1922), "Bare on Bear", cast and gilt mechanical bronze sculpture, signed "C. Kauba" on tail of bear pelt and impressed with "AUSTRIA". Erotic gilt bronze mechanical figural sculpture depicting a reclining female beauty in long draped gown with one arm extended, the other bent and hand holding curled hair, on a bear pelt on a floral and fringed recamier. Dress ornamented with a hinged belt that when opened reveals and elevates female nude to standing position. Overall surmounting a rectangular marble plinth base. Overall approximate height (with woman reclining) 5.3", width 8.75", depth 4.8". Note: Kauba is well-regarded for his mechanical sculptures as well as his use of erotic imagery. He studied in Vienna at the Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Laufenberg, Carl Waschmann, and Stefan Schwartz before leaving to work in Paris, France for a few years.
Condition
Overall very good condition. Patination to bronze with some scattered, minor oxidation and verdigris. Working condition - hinged belt slightly loose.
