Attributed to Carl Spitzweg (German, 1808-1885). "Der Kakstusfreund (The Cactus Friend)", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Tonal painting depicts an older gentleman dressed in long brown coat and brimmed hat standing on a stone patio amidst a container garden of cacti, each plant in a pottery or wooden container and resting on a stone wall, the man holding one flowering cactus in a cylindrical pot up to his face with downturned tobacco pipe extending from his mouth below wire rimmed spectacles on his nose, a tea set arranged on a pedestal behind him to right with blue cushioned chair holding an opened book. The garden is set before a stone building set above on an unseen embankment, with arched gate to left partially hidden by a wall, the scene haloed to top by cascading tree branches and leaves, with a small triangle of blue sky at upper center. Verso of stretcher stamped upper right and lower left "Fritz Bergmann Kunstler u. Komerbedart Berlin-Steglitz Albrechtstrabe 3" (likely for the Austrian 19th century import/ export broker of that name), the lower left stamp obscured by paper label reading "Carl Spitzweg: Der Kaktusfreund.", and verso of frame with applied gallery label from Rudolf Strubel Leipzig. Framed approximately 22" x 16.25", unframed approximately 15.125" x 9.125".
