Christopher Potten (British, 1849-1934). "View on the Lake" - 1872, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right "Christopher Potten 1872". Painting depicts a serene landscape setting centered by a calm lake with a flock of birds above, flanked by trees and large period houses, with a structure in the left foreground fronted by tall trees in a green meadow. Framed 30.75" x 54.75", unframed 24.25" x 48".
Craquelure throughout commensurate with age, however, paint layer appears to be stable. Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, in-painting visible on edges from rubbing on frame. Additional in-painting in sky (likely indicating there were more clouds and birds originally). Retouches also in shrubs surrounding small figures, and in foreground surrounding white flowering bush. Retouches likely to patch a vertical rip (also why work was likely relined) at center running 3.25 inches and damage caused below in grassy ground. Painting would likely benefit from professional cleaning and brighten.
