British School, 19th century. "Portrait of Thomas Clement Thompson", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Interior portrait painting depicting a young man, presumably Thomas Clement Thompson (British, c.1780-1857) at bust length wearing a black suit over white shirt and cravat, the young man with full face having rosy cheeks, a strong nose, full lips, and swept back blonde hair, the figure leaning slightly to left with elbow perched on a desk or table that is holding at left a bound book or volume and at right a marble bust of a man above another leather bound book with only its corner in view, the room with a red drape to left in background and darkly painted walls. Framed approximately 38.25" x 32", unframed approximately 34" x 28.25".
Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, older green varnish coat visible. In-painting in drapery on left, left temple of figure, upper right area of forehead, and two vertical thin lines on jaw line. Long and thin horizontal in-painting line across figure's chest--likely an earlier tear. No other signs of damage, loss or repair. Oxidation on stretcher consistent with age, unable to see edge of original canvas matrix.
