British School, fourth quarter 19th century. "Sailing" - 1884, oil on artists board, monogrammed and dated lower right. Impressionist painting depicting a sailboat at center at sea with arcing and sideswept sails to right and figures on board to left with many other sailboats in view in the distance and a wooden pole or depth marker to lower left. Partial period label to verso of board. Framed approximately 17.25" x 14.25", unframed approximately 13.875" x 11".
Painting would likely benefit from professional cleaning, some visible dirt and grime. Board with wear to edges and corners from rubbing on frame and handling. Scattered craquelure throughout however paint layer appears to be stable. Board with circular recessed concave divot from pressure on board--paint cracked in area but stable. Under black light examination, little to no signs of in-painting or retouches. Painting slightly loose in frame.
