Karl Joseph Litschauer (Austrian, 1830-1871). "Dog Bathtime At the Palace", oil on canvas, signed lower right "K.L. Litschauer". Painting depicts two teenaged Austrian boys in refined dress, one holding down a small dog within an ornate gilt wash basin and the other pouring red liquid from a bottle, possibly tomato juice to cure an incident with a skunk, over the snarling dog, the wash basin set atop a barley twist legged wooden stool on an animal skin rug. The scene is set within the interior of a palace or mansion with an enormous fireplace behind filled with simmering hot coals and topped by silver plates and vessels on the mantle with a lute leaning against the right side of the mantle, and with the edge of a dining table to the left topped by a silver tankard, an overturned wine glass, a plate, and footed compote filled with grapes and other fruit. Label on verso "Joseph Karl Litschauer born 1839 Vienna died 1871 Dusseldorfussom in Vienna". Framed 29.25" x 24.5", unframed 23.5" x 19".
