Attributed to Sir Godfrey Kneller (English, 1643-1723), "Portrait of a Gentleman (Arthur St. Leger, 1st Viscount Doneraile (English, d.1727)", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Formal seated portrait depicting a sophisticated gentleman with grey curled wig, porcelain complexion, wearing a long deep purple to brown draped cloth and jacket with white neck scarf. Male figure leaning against a low architectural wall overlooking view of landscape at left. Framed approximately 61" x 50.5". Unframed approximately 50.25" x 40.25". Provenance: This fine portrait of Arthur St. Leger was obtained by Wilber Gold directly from Doneraile Castle in Ireland in the 1970s. Work then purchased by Dr. Daniel Byrd of Atlanta, Georgia directly from Wilber Gold. Note: Handwritten label on verso attributing work to court portrait painter Sir Peter Lely.
