- Lot Description
Arthur Vidal Diehl (American, 1870-1929). "Venetian Canal Scene with Figures (St. Augustine)"-circa 1923, oil on artist's board, signed lower left. Horizontally-aligned Venetian scene with standing gondolier in boat on water chatting with a figure standing in doorway with arched ornament, view of building and water recessing in distance on left side. Verso pencil inscribed with dedication "St. Augustine Painted Expressly (evidently) for Edith Dougall by Arthur V. Diehl March 1923", label on verso of frame from the gallery, The John Hanna Co, 994 East Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Michigan. Framed approximately 16.6" x 20.25". Unframed approximately 11.75" x 15.5".
Condition
Light and minor wear to frame, particularly on edges. Under black light examination, little to no signs of in-painting or restoration. Paint layer stable without signs of lifting. Little to no signs of craquelure. Board stable and not warped. No other signs of damage, loss or repair. Very good to excellent condition overall.
