Ansonia Clock Company (American (Ansonia, Connecticut and Brooklyn, New York),1851-2006), circa last quarter of 19th century. Mantel clock composed of black slate with gilt incised floral, leaved and scrolled decoration on stacked rectangular architectural body with large circular clock face with black Roman numerals, gilt metal borders (egg and dart and beaded) behind glazed hinged doors, bottom of dial marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE ANSONIA CLOCK C. NEW YORK, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Sides of clock with patinated metal with bronzed patina mounts in the form of Bacchanalian facial masks, overall supported on four scrolled foliate feet. Movement stamped on back with manufacturer "ANSONIA CLOCK CO. U.S.A. NEW YORK", "PATENTED JUNE 18, 1882". Clock accompanied with key for winding movement. Approximate height 10.5", width 15.5", depth 7.75". Provenance: From a Private Collection in Decatur, Georgia.
The glazed door enclosing the dial shows recent sodering. Door opens and shuts smoothly. The interior is extremely clean suggesting recent maintenance, possible replacement of springs. Clock is in working condition and chiming on the half hour and hour, however, we do not guarantee it to continue to work. Some screws have been replaced. There is a missing wood block to the base interior left side. Stamped to exterior back #72. Surface scratches to slate particularly to the side of clock base.
