Andrew Melrose (American, 1836-1901), "Ships Returning to Shore", oil on canvas, signed lower left. Marine painting with sailing vessels returning to shore, waves crashing against large ship in center, figure in ship holds tightly to sails billowing in wind, brown barrel floats through waves in foreground. More boats returning in the distance under cloudy sky. Framed approximately 17" x 20.75". Unframed approximately 13" x 17".
Oxidation to verso of stretcher and canvas commensurate with age. Craquelure to paint surface commensurate with age. Painting not relined. Minor frame rubbing evident to edges. Under black light examination, inpainting to sky around top of mast, at left above boats, on wave roll at lower center to fill in craquelure, and scattered generally to background. Hazy green hue to paint surface indicative of older varnish layer. Verso of canvas with seeped paint from area of in painting in sky. Painting may benefit from professional cleaning.
