American School, likely Ludmilla Pilat Welch (American,(1867-1925) wife of artist Thaddeus Welch (American,1844-1919), "At Rest"-1900, oil on canvas, apparently unsigned but dated lower right "1900". Turn of the century figural painting depicting a charming scene with sleeping white dog with two tuxedo kittens snuggled beside, one cat lovingly paws the resting dog. Framed approximately 19.125" x 29.125". Unframed approximately 14.125" x 24.25".
Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, there are three vertical lines running at far left side of canvas in background with in-painting. Additional scattered in-painting throughout background, particularly on right side and below kitten body. Eye of dog, upper kitten right ear with visible retouches under black light. Scattered craquelure commensurate with age--no signs of lifting. No signs of holes, rips or tears. Under black light, light green haze due to older varnish coat.
