American School, first half of 19th century. "Portrait of a Young Girl with Book", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Formal portrait depicting a young girl with rosy cheeks, pleasant facial expression, brown ringlet curled hair, wearing a red dress with white petticoat seated in a Chippendale chair and with illustrated book in lap within a stark interior with cloak visible at far left. Framed approximately 40.25" x 35.5". Unframed approximately 30.25" x 25.5".
Painting has been relined and placed on later stretcher. Craquelure visible throughout, however, paint layer stable with no signs of lifting. Under black light examination, in-painting visible at left near edge of frame in vertical line. Small areas of retouching in background to left of head, fringe appears to be a later addition. A few other small minor retouches--not on face, hands or book. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
