American School, 19th century. "Portrait of a Military Officer", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Painting depicts a gray haired man standing at waist length wearing a navy blue military uniform jacket over a black cravat and white shirt, the jacket with tall collar and wide coat sleeves adorned with silver foliate and floral embroidery, and with nine large silver buttons down front, each with an eagle in decoration, the gentleman's right hand tucked inside his jacket below the ninth button. Framed approximately 35 1/2" x 28 5/8", unframed approximately 27 3/4" x 20 3/4".
Painting has been relined. Small craquleure throughout commensurate with age--paint layer appears to be stable. Under black light examination, some minor retouches visible including a spot on nose, chin and cheek line on right side of face and area on left side of jacket (not interrupting details such as the buttons). Older varnish coat with greenish hue visible under black light--work may brighten or improve from professional cleaning, some dirt and grime areas visible on face and throughout work. No signs of rips, tears or holes.
