American School, 19th century. “Portrait of Young Boy in Blue”, oil on canvas, unsigned. Formal figural portrait of a child depicting a standing boy with short brown hair wearing a blue stylized jacket or tunic with white color and brass buttons, black belt above white cropped pants or trousers. Figure holding a riding crop in hand and with serious and penetrating facial expression with pale porcelain complexion with rouged cheeks. Boy standing in interior beside an accent table with green tablecloth under pewter pitcher acting as vase for pink roses, red draped curtain panel in back of figure with gold cord and tassels. Framed approximately 45” x 37”. Unframed approximately 39.25” x 32”. Provenance: From the Estate of Sam and Florence Inman, Atlanta, Georgia.
Painting has been relined, edge of original canvas visible and appears to be oxidized commensurate with age. Scattered cracquelure or alligatoring throughout commensurate with age--paint layer appears to be stable. Under black light examination, scattered retouches throughout, minimal on figure and face, predominately in background and on edges--likely from rubbing on frame. Short sideways V shaped retouch on right of figure's right hand in background, likely from tear. Oxidation to frame and stretcher. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
