- Lot Description
Attributed to Alexander Roux (American, (New York) 1813-1886), circa 1860. An impressive rosewood etagere comprising a central crest with squirrel carved in the round, clutching a nut, seated on a branch flanked by roses and prunus fruit carved in the round, over an angled cornice with central arch surmounting the mirrored backboard with conforming central arch with central carved roses, flanked by two rows of three serpentine carved and molded display shelves with finely turned spindles, the outer edges of the upper section with turned spindles terminating in scroll openwork with carved flowers and leaves, the lower section comprising a mirrored backboard behind the molded table, table top with curved front edge surmounting the heavily carved frieze decorated with central bird carved in the round and highly carved roses and foliate scrolls on the two front cabriole legs, each joined by two central display shelves with conforming turning, over the molded lower shelf, all raised on four scroll feet. Approximate height 103.25", width 59", depth 29". Provenance: From an East Hampton, NY estate previously sold by Clarke Auction Gallery (New York) Dec 14, 2014, Lot 119.
Condition
Structurally sound. Traces of glue residue. Shrinkage with horizontal crack under arched cornice. Repair to both front ends of rounded cornice. Evidence of prior staining. Horizontal crack to console top with patched repair at both front projecting corners. Repair to left side of undertier. Minor chips with losses to a couple carved elements. Not distracting.
