American, probably Connecticut, circa 1750 - 1780. A fine Queen Anne curly maple and turned cherrywood tea table having a rectangular cockbeaded tray top above a plain skirt resting on turned, tapering legs ending in button feet. Approximate height 27.25", width 37.5", depth 25.12". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs & Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia. Purchased from Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc, 980 Madison Avenue (76th -77th Streets), New York 10021, New York. Sale number 3981, Americana, April 30, 1977, Lot #989.
Structurally sound. There is shrinkage horizontally on top and minor prior stains. Minor gapping between beaded edge and at corners. Some restoration to top. Underside of top with some replaced block supports. Cracks at top of legs and chips with wood loss to button feet; neither affecting stability. Metal caps on feet later. Wear is commensurate with age and usage.
