American School, late 19th century/ early 20th century. "Brunette Beauty with Red Shawl", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Fine portrait painting of an elegant young brunette beauty depicting the figure at bust length to a sage green ground wearing a stylish white dress with puffed and ruffled sleeves and a sheer lace neckline, a red shawl wrapped around her bare arms, jeweled gold hoop earrings, and a long gold snake chain coiled around her neck several times with a cruciform pendant at her chest, her dark hair braided, curled, and twisted atop her head in the Edwardian style. Framed approximately 33.75" x 28.75". Unframed approximately 27" x 22".
Painting has been relined. Visible oxidation to stretcher and canvas. Scattered craquelure throughout, however, paint layer appears to be stable. Painting with a few scattered small chip losses throughout background. Under black light examination, linear in-painting visible throughout background (likely crack fills or tears), small retouches to woman's cheeks and chin, and throughout bodice of dress. Wear to edges of canvas from rubbing of canvas. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
