American School, 19th century. "Allegorical Pastoral Landscape", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Figural allegorical landscape painting depicting ceremonial scene with fire and dancing figures as two figures, laying on cushions surrounded by scattered vases and other vessels, look on in the foreground, with a small Greek or Roman style structure in the upper left quadrant, with indistinct structures, possibly a village or city in the distance, with majestic pastel sky (likely sunset) overhead. Framed approximately 25.3" x 35.3". Unframed approximately 20" x 30". Provenance: Property of the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
Overall with scattered craquelure and even toning. Painting is re-lined. Paint surface stable overall; with minor lifting to clouds in upper left quadrant, with scattered minor losses to margins. With two punctures to paint surface that have been treated with patches to verso and in-painting to recto. Under black light examination, scattered in-painting to grass and foliage in lower quadrant, and in-painting to edges and corners commensurate with frame rubbing.
