Alexander Austen (British, fl. 1891-1909), "After the Day's Sport", oil on canvas, signed lower right, inscribed with title on verso of canvas. Genre painting depicting four men drinking and smoking in an interior of cottage, man standing toasting to the day's sport, three other men sit to enjoy their pipes, dogs rest at left foreground with the day's game and rifle leaning behind on hall tree supporting two fish and one rabbit, two equestrian portraits hanging on back wall with clock and paned windows. Framed approximately 27.75" x 37.25". Unframed approximately 20.5" x 30".
Painting has not been relined. Oxidation to verso of stretcher and canvas commensurate with age. Shiny surface varnish apparent under raking light. Under black light examination, inpainting to left edge, top left corner, bottom left corner, and top right corner in repair of frame rubbing. One repaired puncture in back doorway at left. Green haze to paint surface of indicative of older varnish layer. Paint layer stable. No other apparent losses, rips, tears, or punctures.
