Alex de Andreis (Belgian, 1880-1929), "Cavalier in Red", oil on canvas, signed lower right. Figural painting depicting a bust length portrait of a male cavalier in traditional dress with large black hat, white collar, and red cape with serious facial expression, holding his sword in gloved hand. Figure standing in an interior with diamond patterned paned glass at left and wood paneling at right in background. Framed approximately 40" x 33.75". Unframed approximately 32" x 26.25". Accompanied with copy of original invoice from E.F. Dietrich Detroit Art and Auction Rooms dated 1935 upon request. Provenance: From the Collection of Mrs. Jackson, Detroit, Michigan whereby sold at E.F. Dietrich Detroit Art and Auction Rooms at 4741 Woodward Avenue in April of 1935 whereby acquired by a Private Collector in Fort Pierce, Florida whereby purchased by a Private Collector in Smyrna, Tennessee thence by descent to the present owner in St. Simon's Island, Georgia.
Painting on original canvas and not relined. Under black light examination, areas of retouching in background to right of figure, zone where head meets hat, left nostril and cheek of figure, chest flanking buttons, scattered areas on robe and above sword. Minor scattered cracquelure commensurate with age. Paint layer stable without signs of lifting or loss. No signs of rips, tears or holes.
