After Pierre Julien (French, 1731-1804), "Amalthea & the Goat of Jupiter", carved marble figural sculpture, unsigned. Large near life size carved marble sculpture after the master sculptor's original currently housed in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France. Mythological sculpture depicting a young female nude with curled hair sitting on a rocky outcropping holding cloth modestly to body and holding tethered goat of Jupiter. Approximate height 56.75", width 28.5", depth 25". Note: Amalthea is noted in Greek mythology to be something of a foster mother to Zeus as she was believed to be a nurturing goddess. At times, she is represented as a goat or other times, such as in this lot, she is portrayed as a goat tending nymph. Julien rendered his original Amalthea in 1787 as a version of The Beauty and the Beast which was originally part of the decoration for the dairy at the Chateau Rambouillet, which Julien sculpted for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette on the eve of the French Revolution. A similar sculpture after Julien's fine work sold at Sotheby's: Amsterdam, May 30, 2007 for over $28,000.
