A mid-19th century painting after Guido Reni (Italian, 1574-1642). "Aurora", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. The original painting is a fresco on the ceiling a garden palace called "Casino dell'Aurora", which is located on the grounds of the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in Rome, Italy. The painting depicts a Classical scene with Apollo in his chariot preceded by a flying Dawn (Aurora) who is carrying floral wreaths in her hands as she ushers in light to the world. These characters are flanked by a group of women walking alongside the chariot atop the clouds, and a winged putto flying beside and carrying a torch. Label on verso of stretcher "Certificate of Authenticity, Guido Reni, "Aurora", circa 1850". Framed 27.25" x 50.5", unframed 17.75" x 41". Provenance: Eugene O'Karma, Atlanta, Georgia.
Painting has been relined. Oxidation to back of canvas and frame. Black light examination shows scattered retouches throughout with additional speckling likely from some sort of liquid spray. In-painting on lower section of cupid's stomach, area surrounding cupid's torch, underneath hands of women at far left, and on edges from frame rubbing. Most significant in-painting visible without black light on blue robe underneath and on hands. Craquelure or alligatoring present however paint layer seems stable.
