• Lot Description
  Yoruba people (West African (Nigeria/ Benin)), 20th century. A Yoruba Gelede helmet mask made of carved wood and burlap and decorated with iron bells, cowry shells, and paint, the form with domed head bearing hatch patterned field of dark hair over bulbous almond shaped eyes, triangular nose, and full lips all covered with black paint, the cheeks with arcs of teal colored paint, the neck area with applied burlap band decorated with cowry shells and clusters of iron bells, the base a hollowed and painted gourd. Approximate height 19.5", width 13", depth 16". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Calvin Wayne McLarin, Atlanta, Georgia.
