American, late 19th century. An Aesthetic Movement ebonized wood curio cabinet or etagere comprising a high relief carved owl flanked by acorn leaves and high relief carved acorns, over a molding surmounting the central beveled form mirror and molded cabinet top, the rectangular glass door decorated with patinated organic foliate form hinges and decorative patinated keyhole escutcheon, door opening to interior with one bracket for the placement of a shelf, over an arch decorated with incised carving with vines and corner sunbursts, the central portion flanked by two side display cabinets each with projecting molded cornices, carved cutout arches with sunbursts and patera rondels, and four display surfaces, each with a beveled back mirror and block and baluster turned stiles, the balusters decorated with carved dragonflies, all raised on six carved and molded feet. Approximate height 71", width 48", depth 16.5"
Etagere is in overall good condition with all carved elements intact. Front edges of cabinets and stiles exhibit slight paint loss, and there is a very small area of minor wood loss at left stile. Original hinges and keyhole escutcheon intact. Central mirror exhibits a 1.75" defect. Right mirror exhibits a .25" defect, likely commensurate with age and environmental conditions. There is a .25" split at the center of lower rail and 2 smaller splits at back. Central door base is structurally sound and not sinking at center.
