Japanese, Edo Period (1603-1868). A collection of three iron tsubas or sword guards comprising one tsuba of kaku maru gata form with central nakago-ana flanked to left by rounded kôzuka-bitsu and cloud shaped kôgai-bitsu at right, the top side with relief decoration of a tiger hunting in a landscape and the underside with continued landscape motif, with accents of gold; a second kaku maru gata form iron tsuba with central nakago-ana flanked to left by rounded kôzuka-bitsu and cloud shaped kôgai-bitsu at right, the top sid with relief decoration of two diminutive buddhas or spirits flanking an urn or jar set before flowers, their costuming heightened with gilt, with continued motif to underside; and a mokko gata form (quatrefoil) iron tsuba with central nakago-ana flanked by kôzuka-bitsu and kôgai-bitsu of peaked cloud form, with flat carved lotus blossom at top over smaller leaf forms. Each kaku maru gata tsuba approximately 3.375" x 3.125". Mokko gata tsuba approximately 3.5" x 3.25". Provenance: From the Estate of Channing S. Jun, M.D., Eastman, Georgia.
