French School, late 19th/ early 20th century. "Chickens in Barnyard", oil on canvas, signed lower right "E. Lemaire". Painting depicts a flock of hens and a rooster at center outside a chicken coop, with ladder resting against the barn leading up to a loft filled with hay, the wooden structure filling the right side of composition, a dirt path to left leading back toward a wooded area with another structure within. Framed approximately 36.75" x 30.75", unframed approximately 24 1/8" x 18 1/8".
Unrepaired tear at center (in wooden shed above birds) running vertically approximately 2.25". Scattered in-painting surrounding tear visible under blacklight examination. Craquelure throughout commensurate with age, however, paint layer appears to be stable. Gilt loss and damage to top of frame running approximately 3.5". No other signs of damage, loss or repair. Painting would likely benefit from professional cleaning.
