Continental, 19th century with some earlier and later elements. A carved pressed wood model of The Pantheon in Paris, France, originally constructed between 1758 and 1790 as a Neoclassical style church dedicated to St. Genevieve and now functioning as a secular mausoleum holding the remains of many French notables including Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, and Émile Zola. The model presenting a stylized and simplified version of the structure with cruciform shape bearing central dome at the crossing surrounded by a rooftop gallery conforming to the stepped-in exterior of the building, the facade with a portico bearing two lines of fluted columns before the fretwork triple door entrance with carved inscription to the frieze "AUX GRANDS HOMMES LA PATRIE RECONNAISSANTE (To great men, the grateful homeland)", the building walls carved to resemble brick and mortar architecture. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 20.5", width 20.25", depth 24". Provenance: Mony Linz Einstein Collection whereby sold by Sotheby's, Paris as Lot 20 on their November 22, 2005 auction.
