- Lot Description
Chinese, likely late 19th century, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). An emperor's dragon robe of blue, gold, and white design on brown ground suggesting that this robe was worn during courtly rituals honoring Heaven. The robe having a nine dragon motif, one on each shoulder, four around waist, one on chest, one on back , and one to interior of lapel. Also with a rampant dragon to each cuff, cloud scrolls and bats to the body, with the lower portion of robe ornamented with shui jiao (water foundation) below surging wave patterning with mountains and rocks. Approximately 55" long, 80.5 cuff to cuff across shoulders.
Condition
Several loose threads. Repairs and patches to the arms and underneath the arms as well. There are numerous places with over-stitching to seams. Neck is fraying (see image #4). Silk lining is fraying. Scattered areas of wear to the lower portion of robe. On the backside, there is an tear as well as repairs at the split (see image #10). A couple small areas of soiling, not distracting.
