After Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (French/ Italian, 1815-1891). "Napoleon I in 1814", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. After the Classicist work by Meissonier dated 1862 and currently housed in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland, a 19th century painting depicting the emperor at center atop a white horse set in a forbidding landscape just after his last battle victory in the 1814 French campaign fought at Arcis-sur-Aube, near Troyes where 23,000 French troops defeated 90,000 Austrian troops, Napoleon's bedraggled soldiers in view at lower right following him up a hillside at sunset. Paper label to verso of stretcher with inscription in Cyrillic, printed "1886". Further paper label to verso of frame listing lot or inventory number 251 with brief description of the work. Framed approximately 33.75" x 33.25". Unframed approximately 26" x 25.5". Provenance: Property from the Ann Stone Trust, Shaker Heights, Ohio sold at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, Illinois, February 10, 2014 "Fine Furniture and Decorative Arts", lot 64, and acquired by a private collection in Atlanta, Georgia.
Oxidation to verso of canvas, stretcher, and frame commensurate with age. Paint surface with craquelure commensurate with age. Painting has been relined. Upper left with four pinhole punctures back to front with in painting. Small abrasion with loss at top to left of center, approximately 2mm. Scattered and minor in painting to sky. Napoleon figure and horse with minor in painting to hat, jacket, and saddle. background figures with inpainting to clothes and direct background, some to faces. In painting to land to left, right and under horse. Paint layer stable.
