Charles Branwhite (British, 1817-1880). "English Landscape", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Horizontal naturalistic landscape painting depicting a scenic view on a river set below a castle at center in distance with its turrets reaching above the treeline, the calm river taking a serpentine path through the late summer landscape with a single figure at lower left walking along the river bank toward the viewer and the opposite bank full with lush trees with branches hanging low over the water. Verso of frame with paper label for the San Antonio Museum Association bearing the deaccessioned number 53-82-249 G (1), also with three other paper labels, presumably from the museum, with similar information and the deaccessioning date of February 1987. Plaque to front of work stating the painting was a "gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hudson, 1953". Framed approximately 32.5" x 46.25". Unframed approximately 26.25" x 40". Note: from 1925-1994, the San Antonio Museum Association oversaw the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Witte Museum of Science and History.
Painting has been relined. Oxidation to verso of canvas and frame commensurate with age. Craquelure to paint layer commensurate with age. Under blacklight examination, overall hazy green hue consistent with an older varnish layer, minor inpainting to lower left corner, above shoulders of single figure at left, to upper right corner above a repaired 2" long linear tear, lower center to the water, to left side in repair of frame rubbing, and with further scattered and minor in painting to the foliage. One small front-to-back puncture with paint loss at lower right to left of center, approximately 5mm long, repaired. A few very minor (less than 1mm) chips or paint losses scattered to canvas. Paint layer stable.
