German School, 19th century. "Nature Morte: Pair of Ducks", oil on canvas, signed lower left "L.O. Kurz, Munchen, 1882". Painting presents a trompe l'eoil depiction of a pair of dead ducks on a dark green ground hanging by their red feet from tied twine suspended out of view, with shadows cast to the left of the figures. Framed 37.5" x 26.5", unframed 32.25" x 21". Provenance: From the The Kildare-McCormick House, a historic residence in Huntsville, Alabama, where art dealer James F. Reeves and his wife furnished the 17,000 square foot mansion with selected pieces they purchased over a span of 30 years.
Paint losses visible at bottom edge from rubbing on frame. Under black light examination, in-painting throughout predominately in background at bottom surrounding ducks' heads. Some scattered in-painting or retouches on birds' feathers including one small circular raised area (possibly a dimple to canvas). Minor craquelure commensurate with age--however paint layer appears to be stable.
