Continental School (likely French), 19th century. Wooden tabletop panel of rectangular form with undulating sides decorated on top with figural courting scene within yellow to gold foliate border. Youn man in blue jacket presenting a floral spray or bouquet to young woman in white and yellow dress in a romantic outdoor garden setting. Apparently unsigned. Work unframed but with hook on back for displaying on wall. Unframed approximately 16.25" x 22.75".
Substantial wear to back commensurate with age and prior function as table top with wood loss and some recessed areas where pressure was placed on wood by frame. Under black light examination, in-painting visible on edges and throughout background surrounding figure's heads and on temple of man. Scattered craquelure throughout however paint layer appears to be stable. Visible veneer loss under top coat to lower right corner. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
